There are 13 counties in Region 6, all in Central and West Michigan, an area with a long history of regional planning activities relating to trauma and EMS systems development.


Region 6
A volunteer group - the Midwest Michigan Regional Medical Control Consortium - formed in the early 1990’s to address common issues of trauma care. Staff from most of the region's medical control authorities and hospitals worked together over the next 10 years to more closely coordinate trauma activities in this area.

Ongoing cooperation led the area, along with Kalamazoo-area medical control authorities, to become the first region in Michigan to develop and adopt region-wide, common EMS protocols among multiple medical control authorities. The region has also developed a common drug bag for the region and expanded activities to include a regional Pharmacy and Protocol Committee and a Regional Quality Improvement Committee.

A move into regional Domestic Preparedness activities began in mid 1999 when Grand Rapids officials learned that the city had been designated by the federal government as one of  about 120 metropolitan areas to slated for grant funds for the development of a  Metropolitan Medical Response System.

A Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Steering Committee was formed to prompt discussions and interactions among those who would be involved in the development process. A formal contract with the City of Grand Rapids its for MMRS program development was finalized in September 2001. Learn more at the MMRS website.
